Join this Guided Virtual Service Experience - Minecraft March on Washington

Tour a virtual exhibit of the historic 1963 March on Washington through the world of Minecraft to interact with Civil Rights leaders like Dr. King himself and activists who are continuing Dr. King's legacy today.

A SPECIAL MINECRAFT MLK DAY PROJECT:

  • Meet the activists from the historic 1963 March on Washington who paved the way for change against systemic racism and current activists who are continuing Dr. King's legacy today.
  • Build an exhibit of your own and/or add content to the experience for students to learn from in the Minecraft Java universe.

WHY: MLK Day of Service is a defining moment each year when Americans across the country step up to make our communities more equitable and take action. Dr. King believed that “injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere” as he fought for systemic change. His example is our call to action.

Video games, an important means for human connection, have become especially valuable during this pandemic. With 126 million people playing Minecraft monthly, we have the opportunity to leverage this platform to create the infrastructure for a whole new level of volunteer participation. This year, we'll inspire the next generation of activists by giving them a platform to listen to the voices that spoke before them and give them a space for their voices to be heard as well.

THE EXPERIENCE: Volunteers will first meet our L.A. Works team via Zoom to receive a short introduction about the exhibit and troubleshoot any technical issues. Afterward, our team will give volunteers a tour of the virtual space, introduce them to non-player character versions of past and present activists, and give them a chance to build an activism-centric model of their own. Please note: this opportunity is guided by an L.A Works staff.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • A computer, Mac, PC, Linux, PS4/5, Switch, mobile, or tablet
  • Stable internet connection;
  • A mic and speakers or headphones for conversations; and
  • Access to Minecraft (Java or Bedrock Edition).
  • Please note the times listed below are PST
LOCATION: This opportunity takes place online, alongside L.A Works staff, on Saturday (1/14) from 10:00AM - 12:00PM PST. You will be emailed the Zoom link to participate after signing up, and our L.A. Works team will show you how to access the exhibit on the day of the event.

For those who have already registered, you should have received a Zoom link from the opportunity coordinator (natalie@laworks.com) on Thursday (1/12). Please check your spam folder before emailing natalie@laworks.com, if you cannot find the Zoom invitation.

If you are unable to make this guided tour, you can take a self-guided tour where you can take the tour at your own pace. The Minecraft world will be open on Saturday (1/14) and Monday (1/16) for volunteers to join and explore. You can sign up for this opportunity at laworks.com/mlk.

MLK DAY OF SERVICE: This is a part of L.A. Works’ MLK Jr. Day of Service 2022 event to honor Dr. King’s life and legacy through service. The event builds upon the anti-racism movement through an interactive March on Washington in Minecraft and in-person event at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum on 1/16 .
