Opportunity Details
Plant Trees with the National Park Service!
Note: Rescheduled to March 4 Due to Rain!
QUICK OVERVIEW
With support from California Volunteers, L.A. Works has expanded its capacity to serve organizations addressing climate resilience. As part of this initiative, we are teaming up with the National Park Service and Santa Monica Mountains Foundation to host a morning of habitat restoration in Cheeseboro Canyon. Join us for a beautiful morning of tree planting to promote wildfire resilience!
MISSION OR ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW
The National Park Service preserves unimpaired the natural and cultural resources and values of the National Park System for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of this and future generations.
As a fundraising and educational arm of NPS, the Santa Monica Mountains Foundation works to protect and encourage appreciation and understanding of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area.
IMPACT
Your volunteer efforts contribute to the ongoing Rewilding California Project, which aims to plant 100,000 native plants in 5 key wildfire-affected areas by the end of 2023. At this event, we will be making important progress towards this goal by planting 500 trees and other native species in Cheeseboro Canyon, ensuring that the distinctly Californian flora and fauna of the Santa Monica Mountains are resilient to climate change and preserved for generations to come. Habitat restoration of this kind contributes to wildfire mitigation because native grasses, trees, and shrubs are more fire-resistant than the burn-prone invasive grasses that have proliferated in these areas following wildfires in the last five years.
VOLUNTEER ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Volunteers will spend a beautiful morning in the Santa Monica Mountains planting native oak trees and willows. Volunteers will be trained in planting techniques and will have the chance to learn about the natural history and future of the ecosystems of the Santa Monica Mountains.
Duties: After registration, volunteers will make a half-hour, flat walk to the tree-planting site where they will be trained in planting techniques to plant native oaks, willows, and other species. The walk is approximately 3.4 miles round trip, 1.7 miles in and out of the site.
Time/shift commitment: 8:30 - 9:00 am: Registration; 9:00 am - 12:00 pm: Tree Planting
Physical demands: Ability to complete a 30-minute, relatively flat walk ( ~220 ft elevation gain, 3.4 miles roundtrip). Ability to kneel for extended periods of time for digging and planting. Note: We will also have a seedbomb activity closer to the parking lot for those unable to make the walk, and for extra fun!
Dress code: We recommend that volunteers wear outdoor/garden-appropriate clothing, including sunglasses, long, loose pants, and sturdy, close-toed walking shoes with long, thick socks. Other supplies such as gloves and shovels will be provided.
Sign-up deadline/training procedure:
- Sign up by 2/24.
- For FAVE guests without their own LA Works account, pease email shayn@laworks.com to sign up.
-
All volunteers will check in upon arrival and will listen to a brief safety talk before hiking to the site. If you need assistance with language interpretation, please inform the Opportunity Coordinator below.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Coffee, water, and light snacks will be provided, but please bring refillable water bottles. Additionally, please arrive on time, as staff will lead volunteers to the restoration site. Finally, keep in mind that parking can fill up quickly on weekends, so we strongly recommend carpooling and arriving early.
ACCESSIBILITY
There is an unpaved, 30-minute flat walk to the tree-planting site. However, there will be other activities for those who cannot make the walk or kneel for long periods of time. Contact the opportunity leader for more details.
