Reading to Kids Monthly Reading Club
MISSION
Reading to Kids is a grassroots organization dedicated to inspiring underserved children with the love of reading, thereby enriching their lives and opportunities for future success. Our mission is motivated by a landmark 1985 study, conducted by the National Commission on Reading, which found that "the single most important activity for building the knowledge required for eventual success in reading aloud to children."
IMPACT
Reading to Kids organizes monthly reading clubs on the second Saturday of every month at eight downtown Los Angeles elementary schools. Volunteers read aloud to small groups of K-5th grade children and create arts and crafts projects about the stories.
Each child receives a book to take home and the books read aloud are donated to the school's library. Reading aloud to children imparts a love of books that leads to improved literacy, a more successful education, and a brighter future.
This opportunity services eight Los Angeles Unified School District elementary schools in the Pico-Union/Westlake neighborhoods near downtown LA. Schools location and map available HERE. This opportunity serves the zip codes: 90019, 90017, 90057, and 90006.
VOLUNTEER ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Pairs of volunteer readers read aloud to small groups of students from the elementary school (typically between 4 and 6 children per group) in a fun environment that includes creating crafts. Reading to Kids supplies all of the books and craft supplies, and teachers at the elementary schools provide supervision and guidance throughout the morning.
