Maintain & Restore Oak Woodlands in the Santa Monica Mountains

In honor of Earth Day, join us for a gorgeous morning where we will nurture newly planted trees in Cheeseboro Canyon with the NPS and SaMo Fund!

MISSION
In partnership with California Climate Action Corps, a program of California Volunteers (Office of the Governor), L.A. Works is on a mission to amplify environmental justice initiatives supporting the communities most impacted by climate change. By sequestering carbon and lowering the severity of wildfires in our most wildfire-prone region, we are fostering cleaner air and a healthier environment for Angelenos.

IMPACT
Your volunteer efforts contribute to the ongoing Rewilding California Project, which aims to plant 100,000 native plants in 5 key wildfire-affected areas by the end of 2023. The goal of this restoration project is to restore an oak
savannah and return native cover to areas that burned in the Woolsey
Fire. In restoring heavily degraded oak woodlands we are helping to
fight climate change, bring back species diversity, and provide habitat
for displaced species in the distinctly Californian the Santa Monica Mountains! 

VOLUNTEER ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Volunteers will spend a beautiful morning in the Santa Monica Mountains nurturing native oak trees. Work will consist of planting and watering native trees to rebuild oak
woodland habitat, as well as weeding and putting new cages on
previously planted trees and restoration sites. No experience necessary! Volunteers will be trained by NPS & Samofund Staff and will learn about the natural history and future of the ecosystems of the Santa Monica Mountains. You may even get to plant some trees if this rainy Spring continues!

REQUIREMENTS

• Check-in between 8:30-9am
• ​Physical demands: Ability to complete a 25-minute, relatively flat walk (1.7 miles, ~220 ft elevation gain). Ability to kneel for extended periods for weeding and cage building. Note: we will have other opportunities without kneeling – contact the opportunity coordinator for more details. 
• Attire: Outdoor/garden-appropriate clothing, including sunglasses, long, loose pants, and sturdy, close-toed walking shoes with long thick socks. Other supplies such as gloves and shovels will be provided. 
• ​Safety protocols: Make sure to bring a refillable water bottle and sun protection (sunscreen, hats, sunglasses, etc). Water refill stations will be available and easily accessible. 
• ​All volunteers under 18 MUST be joined by an adult who can sign their waiver.
• Please register promptly to avoid disappointment. Once the event reaches capacity, you will be waitlisted due to limited resources and supplies.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Coffee, water, and light snacks will be provided, but please bring refillable water bottles.  Parking can fill up quickly on weekends, so we strongly consider carpooling and arriving early.
