Read Aloud to Children Each Month
Inspire children to love reading!
Why: National Commission on Reading found through a landmark study published in 1985 that "the single most important activity for building the knowledge required for eventual success in reading aloud to children."
Who: Reading to Kids is a grassroots organization dedicated to inspiring underserved children with the love of reading, thereby enriching their lives and opportunities for future success.
- Reading to Kids organizes monthly reading clubs on the second Saturday of every month at eight downtown Los Angeles elementary schools. The reading clubs run from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
- Teachers at the elementary school provide supervision and guidance throughout the morning.
- Pairs of volunteer readers read aloud to small groups of students from the elementary school (typically between 4 and 6 children per group) in a fun environment that includes creating crafts.
- Reading to Kids supplies all of the books and craft supplies, and teachers at the elementary schools provide supervision and guidance throughout the morning.
- Exact school locations to be provided by Reading to Kids.
- Volunteers must be 18 or older to volunteer with Reading to Kids.
- Volunteers for the reading clubs are encouraged to be vaccinated against COVID-19 and to wear a mask while indoors on campus for the reading clubs. The children are also encouraged to wear a mask while indoors.
