Impacting Students Through Literacy & Mentoring '24-'25
As part of our education programming series, we are proud to partner with Read to a Child for this virtual info session. In this 30-minute Zoom presentation, you'll hear Read to a Child's staff explain how each volunteer is matched during the school year with a Kindergarten to 4th-grade student for in-person learning.
Why: In Read to a Child’s Read Aloud Mentoring Program, a volunteer is partnered one-on-one with a student attending one of our partner Title I elementary schools in Los Angeles for a rewarding, weekly read-aloud experience. The relationship lasts for the entire school year and often extends for multiple years through the end of 4th grade. Reading pairs are supported by an on-site Program Coordinator, employed by Read to a Child, and provided access to a wide selection of diverse books to read.
The simple act of reading aloud to a child once a week, over time, can have a profound impact on the child’s future. Our Read Aloud Mentoring Program also offers adults a convenient, joyful, and meaningful way to give back.
Who: At this virtual information session, you will learn about Read to A Child's Literacy & Mentoring Program, the In-Person Volunteer opportunities available, and what you will need to complete to begin volunteering. Read to a Child staff will be available to answer any questions you may have (additional time is available for more questions).
During the Zoom info session, Read to a Child staff will review the locations and days/times available at our partner schools, which are located in Hollywood and downtown Los Angeles.
What's Required:
• Application, background check, and orientation/training + LAUSD application, fingerprinting, and TB test (more details provided at information session).
• Must commit to a minimum of half an hour a week, weekly (same day each week), for the entire school year. Read to a Child accepts volunteers throughout the school year from September/October to April. Our program runs through the end of May/early June.
