Become a Role Model - Children Experiencing Homelessness Need You!
Volunteer with School On Wheels to make a difference, and empower youth that are experiencing homelessness as an online or in-person tutor.
Why: Volunteer tutoring is the cornerstone of our program. Our volunteers meet with their students a minimum of one hour a week to provide positive mentorship and educational assistance. Becoming a tutor means giving back in a way that’s personal, meaningful, and rewarding. You will create deep connections with students and see the positive and lifelong impact you can have on a student’s life.
Who: Since 1993, the mission of School on Wheels has never wavered: to enhance educational opportunities for children who are experiencing homelessness from kindergarten through twelfth grade and who are living in shelters, motels, group foster homes, vehicles, and on the streets in six counties in Southern California. Our goal is to shrink the gaps in their learning and provide them with the highest level of education possible. Our program serves as a consistent support system for our students during a time of great stress and fear.
What to Expect:- Take the lead in supporting a scholar academically through an ongoing relationship
- Create a welcoming and safe space where mentee(s) can grow and develop new skills
- Meet students where they’re at in both their personal and academic journey
- Establish positive and personal relationships with mentee(s) and their families
- Serve as a positive role model
- Age 18 and older,
- Live in California,
- Have stable high-speed internet access,
- Have a computer with a webcam,
- Comfort tutoring in a digital environment,
- Have reliable transportation for in-person opportunities, and
- Able to complete Livescan check
