Ballona Wetlands Habitat Stewardship

Join Ballona Wetlands in planting native species and removing weeds in one of Southern California's natural wetland ecosystem.  

Why: 

The Ballona Wetlands Ecological Reserve provides critically important habitat to wildlife. Invasive weeds can crowd out native vegetation and decrease habitat value. By participating in this stewardship even, you will be directly benefitting wildlife by making more room for native wetland vegetation. In addition, community stewardship efforts raise awareness about the wetlands and their unique value.

Who: 

The Ballona Wetlands Land Trust is a non-profit community organization dedicated to advocating for, the greater Ballona Wetlands ecosystem. Ballona is one of the last remaining coastal wetlands in Los Angeles County and a valuable habitat for rare and endangered species in Southern California.

What to Expect: 

• Volunteers will receive a safety briefing and direction on what weeds we will be pulling that day. 
• Native species will be planted by volunteers during the second hour of the event.
• The California Department of Fish and Wildlife and the Ballona Wetlands Land Trust team will be present to help answer any questions. 

What's Required:

• Volunteers must be age 18 or over OR be accompanied by a parent or guardian. 
• Please bring your own water bottle, close-toed shoes, and sun protection.
• Gloves and other equipment will be provided onsite.
• Participants should be able to recognize their physical limitations and pace themselves accordingly to avoid fatigue.
• The California Department of Fish and Wildlife requires participants to sign a waiver which includes a citizenship question. If you would like to participate but do not wish to answer the question, please let us know and we will work with them to accommodate you.
