Wildfire Resource Center Captain Assistants

Volunteer to use your administrative and hospitality skills to welcome and help check volunteers in and support them at the center!

Why: Volunteering as a Captain Assistant will mean that there is even more consistent support for volunteers throughout the operation and that more survivors will be able to access resources and supplies for their recovery from these devastating losses.

Who: L.A. Works is partnering with the Emergency Network of Los Angeles (ENLA), and national, state and local community-based organizations to provide resources and services to wildfire survivors.

What to Expect: 

• Led by Volunteer Captains, the Captain Assistants will gain volunteer management experience assisting with:
  • Shift transition check in and check out including providing and gathering documents to sign
  • Checking on volunteers in different areas
  • Providing updates and information for late arrivals
  • Assisting with volunteer reminder calls
  • Assisting with Agency check in
• What’s Provided For All Volunteers:
  • Breaks, snacks and a meal
  • Volunteer Nametag (First Name, Initial)
  • Easy parking onsite
  • Possibility of rotating roles if needed

What’s Required:

• Event check in experience a plus
• Experience using a tablet or laptop to enter information into forms, navigate between pages or applications, and opening and closing applications as needed.
• Ability to stay calm in a hectic environment
• Customer Service/Hospitality Focus when interacting with others
• Ability to maintain strict confidentiality
• Compassion and Patience
• Welcoming and positive attitude
• Able to follow directions
• Arrive on time and stay for the duration of the shift
• Check out with Volunteer Captain before leaving shift

Note: The Wildfire Resource Center is located within the burn area of Pacific Palisades:

• Volunteers should be aware that it may be difficult to see the devastation inside of the burn area and choose whether or not to volunteer in consideration of the location.
• Making a commitment to this role is especially important in this case as we will need to make special arrangements with authorities. Only volunteers who can commit to showing up for their shifts should sign up. 
• Volunteers should plan to spend an extra 15-30 minutes before shift time for navigating checkpoints.
