Project Leaders: Cesar Chavez Day at Ritchie Valens Park
Become a Project Leader with L.A. Works as we come together to honor the enduring legacy of Cesar Chavez and march for justice, equality, and the rights of all workers through service projects!
Why: By dedicating our time and effort at this event, we are contributing to the mission of empowerment and solidarity. Our intentions are to not only strengthen our communities, but also foster a spirit of service, education, and collective action. Together, we can amplify the values of dignity, respect, and fairness.
Who: As a project leader, you will partner alongside L.A. Works with Pueblo y Salud for their annual Cesar Chavez Day event - which is a powerful opportunity to honor the legacy of a visionary leader who fought tirelessly for justice, equality, and the rights of farmworkers. The work we complete at this event will positively impact local BIPOC in San Fernando Valley and fire affected communities such as Los Angeles Unified School District Student Support Programs, Homeless Education Office/CES Sites Ruth's Place, HOPICS, and student organization Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano/as de Aztlán at Los Angeles Mission College.
- As a project leader, you will help lead volunteers in doing the following projects:
- 1,500 Disaster Prepardeness Kits: organizing materials, giving directions to participants, lifting at least 15 lbs boxes, etc.
- 150 Economic Resource Kits: organizing materials, giving directions to participants, lifting at least 15 lbs boxes, etc.
- Setting up/tearing down the project areas: lifting project bins into trucks 10-20lbs, assisting with taking down tables and canopies.
- As a project leader you may also be asked to do the following:
- Help unload the L.A. Works van and set up the various activities.
- Ensure volunteers are working safely, efficiently, and are having fun!
- No experience necessary! Training will be provided day-of!
- Must be comfortable with hands-on physical work (i.e. standing for long periods of time [with breaks; chairs will be provided], sorting, packing, etc).
- Adults should be able to lift up to 15-20 lbs (or ask for other tasks by emailing the Opportunity Leader).
- You will be working outside so wear sunscreen and closed-toe shoes. It is also reccomended to wear a hat, long pants, and long-sleeve shirts.
- A protective mask is reccomended to protect yourself from any lingering smoke/smog in the air left by the fires.
- Lunch will be provided.
