Native Tree Planting for Earth Day on Tongva Land
Join us in celebrating Earth Day and give back to this unceded Tongva land by planting native fire-resilient trees and shrubs that will help mitigate wildfires!
Why: By participating in this Earth Day event you will help to restore a native habitat that was deforested by early settlers, learn about the Indigenous concept of rematriation of land, and celebrate the Earth with other passionate volunteers.
Who: L.A. Works is teaming up with Sunland-Tujunga Forward to host this native planting day. Sunland-Tujunga Forward is a community organization that focuses on creating spaces for collaborative action centering equity, inclusion, and transformative relationships.
What to Expect: This event is a hands-on native planting day, volunteers will be working in teams of 3 to restore this land. In addition to the volunteer activity, we will also have an Indigenous Culture Bearer to share the history of this land, as well as the environmental and cultural importance of the site. Light breakfast and beverages will be provided.
What's Required:
- Time/shift commitment: 8:00 AM - 11:30 AM
- Physical demands: Ability to be in the sun for several hours.
- Dress code: We recommend that volunteers wear outdoor/garden-appropriate clothing, including sunglasses, long-sleeved shirts, long, loose pants, and sturdy, close-toed walking shoes with long, thick socks.
- Safety protocols: Make sure to bring a filled water bottle and sun protection (sunscreen, hats, sunglasses, etc)
- Volunteers are requested to bring 2 gallons of water for plants each
- A positive attitude and readiness to work outdoors!
