Read LA! Storytime

Join Families in Schools as a trained literacy volunteer to help underserved chidren in Los Angeles!

Why: Experiencing a natural disaster can be traumatic and disorienting for children. By volunteering with Read LA! Storytime, you’ll help bring a sense of comfort, connection, and joy to young children who have been affected by the L.A. wildfires. Through the simple yet powerful act of reading, you’ll nurture resilience and joy of reading, helping children feel seen, supported, and safe during a time of recovery.

Who: For 25 years, Families In Schools has served low-income, immigrant, and communities of color, knowing that education remains the single most important opportunity for them. The mission of Families In Schools is to involve families and communities in their children's education to achieve lifelong success.

• Read to Children: Volunteers will read to small groups of TK-3rd grade children. You’ll receive virtual training on trauma-informed approaches and effective storytelling techniques to help you create a supportive and engaging environment.
• Inventory and Book Distribution:  Help organize and distribute book donations across Los Angeles. Tasks may include lifting boxes of books (up to 30 lbs), sorting by grade level, and preparing backpacks for delivery.
• Storytime Event Set-Up: Assist in creating a welcoming and engaging space for Storytime sessions. This may involve setting up book displays, seating, and props or decorations related to the stories being read.
• What to Expect on the Day: You’ll receive a name badge upon arrival. Water and snacks will be provided.  A brief orientation will help you feel prepared and supported. FIS staff will be available to guide you throughout the event.

• Complete an online volunteer application
• Consent to a background check
• Follow all Read LA! Storytime child protection policies and guidelines
• Complete required training and orientation sessions
• Commit to your assigned shift to the best of your ability
