Ballona Wetlands Habitat Stewardship
Join Bellona Wetlands in removing weeds that are harmful to Southern California's natural wetland ecosystem.
Why: The Ballona Wetlands Ecological Reserve provides critically important habitat to wildife. Invasive weeds can crowd out native vegetation and decrease habitat value. By participating in this stewardship even, you will be diirectly benefitting wildlife by making more room for native wetland vegetation. In additionally, community stewardship efforts raise awareness about the wetlands and their unique value.
Who: The Ballona Wetlands Land Trust is a non-profit community organization dedicated to the acquisition, restoration and preservation of the entire Ballona Wetlands ecosystem. Ballona is the only remaining coastal wetlands in Los Angeles County and one of the most valuable habitats for rare and endangered species in Southern California.
What to Expect:
- Every Volunteer will receive a safety briefing and direction on what weeds we will be pulling that day
- Staff of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife as well as staff and volunteers with Bellona Wetlands Land Trust will be present to help answer any questions.
What's Required:
- Volunteers must be age 18 or over OR be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
- Currently, the waivers that CA Fish and Wildlife uses for this event include a citizenship question. However, please let us know if you would like to participate but do not wish to answer the question and we will work with them to accomodate you.
- Participants should be in reasonably good health and be able to pace themselves to avoid fatigue.
- Please bring your own water bottle, close-toed shoes, and sun protection.
- Gloves and other equipment will be provided onsite.
