Bringing Connection and Care to Veterans
Volunteer with Calvet Veterans Home of California WLA to positively impact the lives of veterans facing loneliness, illness, or physical limitations by being a regular presence in their lives.
Why: This volunteer opportunity aims to improve the quality of life for those in need by offering emotional support, companionship, and assistance with basic tasks.
Who: The mission of the CalVet Homes is to provide the state's aged or disabled veterans with rehabilitative, residential, and medical care and services in a home-like environment.
What to Expect:- Engaging in friendly conversations and offering emotional support.
- Offering companionship during outings, such as walks.
- Engaging in activities like reading, puzzles, or simple crafts to stimulate mental engagement.
- Commitment: You’ll need to commit to a regular schedule, whether weekly, bi-weekly, or as required. Consistency is key to building trust and establishing a routine with the resident you’re helping. Minimum 1 year.
- Background Check: This role requires a background check for the safety of both the volunteer and the recipient.
- Training: Attend a training session that prepares you for everyday situations, understanding the specific needs of the resident you’re helping and any safety guidelines.
- Compassion and Patience: You must be prepared to engage with a wide range of emotions and potentially difficult situations, including residents with memory loss or mental health challenges.
- Reliability: As a volunteer, consistency and dependability are essential to ensuring the recipient receives the care they need.
