Meet the Native Plants in Glendale’s Backyard
Come learn about native plants in this guided educational hike with Glendale’s Office of Sustainability!
Why: Our native plants protect and help us in many ways, like reducing wildfire risk and mitigating droughts. However, we threaten them with our ever expanding property development into natural, remote spaces. So get to know their names and why they’re so important! This is also part of our partner’s Earth Month and Beyond event series to encourage constant learning and action for our planet.
Who: Our partner, City of Glendale Office of Sustainability, leads the city’s sustainability efforts through the promotion of efficient practices that meet today's needs, preserve resources for future generations, and protect the city from both existing and future climate change impacts. Sustainability in the City of Glendale is a combination of impactful initiative design, interdepartmental coordination, accountability tracking, and community engagement aimed to foster equitable, sustainable development.
What to Expect: Volunteers will be taken along a 2.8 mile hike on Glendale’s Catalina Verdugo Trail. It is moderately strenuous with an elevation gain of 547 feet and a path about 5-6 feet wide. We will start with an introduction into native plants, their important roles in our ecosystems, and how they fight climate change. Throughout the walk, various native plants and trees will be identified to volunteers, such as laurel sumac, sycamores, and sages. So come prepared to sweat and geek out.
What's Required: Long pants and long sleeve shirts are highly recommended because there is poison oak in the brush along the trail. In addition, please bring water, sun protection, a comfy pair of shoes, and a small snack.
