Aid Elyria Canyon Park’s Wildfire Resiliency with Community Nature Connection
Learn about wildfire resiliency in our city and mitigate wildfire risk by weeding invasive plants around Community Nature Connection's Akuutet Learning Nursery. Go home with a free plant!
Why: Before settlement, wildfires naturally came through Los Angeles’ ecosystem every 30-50 years. However, due to climate change, we now get several wildfires each year. In order to protect our urban areas and restore our ecosystem’s health, we need to clear non-native brush and weed fire prone invasive plant species.
Who: Our partner, Community Nature Connection, increases access to the outdoors for communities impacted by racial, socio-economic, and disability injustices by eliminating existing barriers through advocacy, community centered programming, and workforce development.
What to Expect: First, volunteers will take a guided 10 minute hike uphill along the beautifully lush Elyria Canyon Trail, which has a 200 ft. elevation gain and a 5 ft. wide path, to get to the event site. Then participants will hear about Community Nature Connection’s approach to wildfire resiliency and clear fire prone invasive plant species around their nursery. Tasks include:
- A 15 minute educational workshop on wildfires in our communities
- Weeding
- Using hand tools
- Freshly-brewed coffee
- Snacks
- A free plant!!
What's Required: Long pants and long sleeve shirts are highly recommended because there is poison oak in the brush along the trail to the site. In addition, please bring water, sun protection, a comfy pair of shoes, and a small snack.
