DOVIA-LA July Meeting: Building a Supportive Community Through Hospitality
Hosted By: DOVIA-LA (Directors of Volunteers in Agencies – Los Angeles) is a professional membership association for individuals who lead, manage, and recruit volunteers for a diverse range of nonprofit organizations. DOVIA-LA members meet bi-monthly to network, build skills, and learn about current issues in the field of volunteer management. DOVIA-LA is a program of L.A. Works.
What to Expect:
- Gather with the DOVIA-LA Community for a workshop titled "Building Supportive Community Through Hospitality".
- This and all regular DOVIA-LA Meetings are planned to accomodate everyone by being offered HYBRID. This particular meeting brings our speaker to us virtually but we recommend attending in person for the best experience.
- During this meeting, volunteer engagement professionals will have opportunities to engage with one another in group discussions and we will take time for community support and to hear from members looking to learn about experience with an issue or resource need.
Volunteers are the backbone of nonprofit work, yet too often they are treated as extra hands to complete tasks. This workshop will introduce a hospitality-based approach to volunteer engagement, emphasizing the dual role of nonprofits as builders of community and cultivators of belonging for volunteers. Loneliness is an epidemic, and a lot of the volunteers who are helping to build their communities lack a sense of community. There are things we can do to create environments centered on human connection, where volunteers feel valued and a part of a team that cares about them.
In this presentation, we want participants to understand that when volunteers feel genuinely valued, the impact goes beyond supporting a cause — it enriches humanity and encourages more frequent volunteerism. This aligns with research, such as Yale's course on happiness, which highlights how acts of kindness and feeling appreciated can drive personal happiness. We'll draw from this study and others that underscore how essential a welcoming environment is for retention.
About Our Presenter: Jasmine Perry is a former tv producer who turned to nonprofit work and served as manager of L.A. Works' Workforce Development program.
