Collect Seeds to Regenerate Our County’s Soils at Descanso Gardens
Join L.A. Works and the Center for Applied Ecological Remediation in harvesting native plant seeds at Descanso Gardens. Admission into the gardens is provided!!
Why: Ecological remediation is a way to clean up pollutants left by heavy industry or natural disasters using plants and fungi. Standard clean up methods are wasteful and expensive because usually entire layers of soil are removed and dumped into a landfill. By collecting seeds that will be planted at research sites, you’ll help rebuild our county’s communities that bear the brunt of pollution in a cheaper, non-destructive way.
Who: Our partner, Center for Applied Ecological Remediation, advances research and use of ecological remediation in order to decrease pollution, promote our county’s health, educate citizens, develop the workforce, and build climate resilience. Current projects include those affected by transportation pollution like the Taylor Yard Park, South LA, and Koreatown, and wildfire-affected sites in Altadena and the Palisades. Our host, Descanso Gardens, is a highly accredited museum of living collections that connects people with nature.

What to Expect:
- We’ll be walking around the grounds of Descanso Gardens and occasionally wading through the brush.
- Most of the pathways are flat while some have slight inclines and the brush is moderate.
- 30-minute educational talk about California native plants, bioremediation, and seed harvesting techniques

- Seed processing
What's Required:
- Please wear long pants, long sleeves, and a comfy pair of shoes.
- It may be hot so bring water, sun protection, and a willingness to work outside.
