NEW YEAR IN NATURE : TEND THE LAND AT TUJUNGA CANYON
Join us for Tend the Land at Tujunga Canyon on Saturday, January 31st — a morning of hands-on stewardship that celebrates the living ground beneath our feet and supports the ongoing work of urban greening and wildfire resilience in Los Angeles. This volunteer event is hosted in partnership with California Climate Action Corps, a program of California Volunteers, Office of the Governor, and our partners at Sunland-Tujunga Forward.
Why: Healthy soil is one of LA’s most underrated climate solutions. It helps cool neighborhoods, hold water during drought, support native biodiversity, and build landscapes that are more fire-resilient over time. When we remove invasives and support native plants, we’re not just “beautifying”—we’re strengthening the ecosystem’s ability to recover, thrive, and protect our communities.
Who: Sunland-Tujunga Forward has a vision to breathe new life into Sunland-Tujunga through collaborative action that centers equity, inclusion, and transformative relationships, inspired by the needs of our environment and all its diverse inhabitants.
What to Expect: We’ll be working directly with the land to support a healthier, more resilient canyon ecosystem whilst also honoring the cultural history of this place as part of the ancestral homelands of the Tongva people. This is a hands-on, sweat-worthy volunteer event - the kind that leaves you tired, proud, and grounded. You’ll learn about local ecosystems, meet climate-minded neighbors, and make a meaningful impact in just a few hours.
Tasks will include:- Removing invasive plants
- Watering and caring for established natives and seedlings
- Clearing debris to restore healthy land and habitat
- General land maintenance to support long-term restoration work
- Time/shift commitment:
- 8:00 AM - 11:00 AM
- Physical demands:
- Physical labour, some lifting and ability to be in the sun for several hours.
- Dress code:
- We recommend that volunteers wear outdoor/garden-appropriate clothing, including sunglasses, long-sleeved shirts, long, loose pants, and sturdy, close-toed walking shows with long, thick socks.
