HONOR CESAR CHAVEZ DAY : TEND THE LAND : RESTORE TUJUNGA CANYON
Join us in Tujunga Canyon for a hands-on day of service to honor César Chávez Day and the legacy of community action, dignity, and care for the land. Together, we will remove invasive plants and help clear the land so native habitat can thrive, reducing fire risk and supporting a healthier, more resilient landscape for the future. This is a chance to come together outdoors, give back in a meaningful way, and celebrate Chávez’s spirit of collective responsibility through practical action that strengthens both community and environment.
Why: Healthy soil is one of LA’s most underrated climate solutions. It helps cool neighborhoods, hold water during drought, support native biodiversity, and build landscapes that are more fire-resilient over time. When we remove invasives and support native plants, we’re not just “beautifying”—we’re strengthening the ecosystem’s ability to recover, thrive, and protect our communities.
Who: Sunland-Tujunga Forward has a vision to breathe new life into Sunland-Tujunga through collaborative action that centers equity, inclusion, and transformative relationships, inspired by the needs of our environment and all its diverse inhabitants.
What to Expect: We’ll be working directly with the land to support a healthier, more resilient canyon ecosystem whilst also honoring the cultural history of this place as part of the ancestral homelands of the Tongva people.- Tasks will include:
- Removing invasive plants
- Clearing debris to restore healthy land and habitat
- General land maintenance to support long-term restoration work
- Time/shift commitment: 8.30 AM - 11.30 AM
- Physical demands: Physical labour, some lifting and ability to be in the sun for several hours.
- Dress code: We recommend that volunteers wear outdoor/garden-appropriate clothing, including sunglasses, long-sleeve
