Community Habitat Restoration
Join us for a habitat restoration event! It’s a great opportunity to learn about native plants and local wildlife, all while spending time outdoors in beautiful Baldwin Hills Parklands.
Why: Efforts support the upkeep of popular green space in a central urban area and its local community. Volunteers will learn about this once drilled and exploited land, which has now become a symbol of restoration, conservation, and hope.
Who: Nature Nexus Institute (NNI) is founded on the belief that reciprocity between communities and nature is essential to the survival of both. We seek to provide equitable and intergenerational entry points to cultivating healthy community-nature relationships. To that end, we strive to be a nexus for science, culture, art, and research endeavors that result in a new generation of change-makers and storytellers.
What to Expect:- Clean up
- Weeding
- All around park maintenance that will get your hands dirty
- Volunteers will help us with maintenance and restoration projects for about 2.5 hours
- Volunteers under 18 years of age must be accompanied by a parent/guardian
- Habitat restoration tasks are best suited for people who are 12 years of age or older
- All Volunteers will receive safety training and garden tools (ex. gloves, hand-tools, etc.) to complete projects.
- Physical demands: Ability to be in the sun and perform light physical activity for several hours
- Dress code: Please wear long pants and covered shoes.
- Safety protocols: Please bring plenty of drinking water for yourself as well as ample sun protection. Work sites are frequently off trail and may be on uneven terrain.
- Note: We typically meet up at the top parking lot adjacent to the visitor center to start the event, but we work in several sites throughout the park. If you arrive late you may have trouble finding us. Please be sure to RSVP so we know to expect you!
