STOP FOOD WASTE WEEK : COMMUNITY COMPOSTING IN ECHO PARK
Join LA Works, and the Seeds of Hope, "Rot Squad: on Stop Food Waste Day to take meaningful climate action at the community level.
Why: Composting is one of the most powerful ways to reduce food waste, keep valuable organic material out of landfill, cut methane emissions, and return nutrients to the soil. This session helps volunteers connect the dots between food, waste, climate, and community care.
Who: Seeds of Hope is a Los Angeles-based food justice organization that helps cultivate wellness through food distribution, gardening, nutrition education, and composting. LA Works is proud to partner with Seeds of Hope because their work brings together community care, healthier food systems, and hands-on environmental action.
What to Expect:- Volunteers will join the Rot Squad for a community composting session in partnership with Seeds of Hope and LA Works.
- Participants will learn about the basics of composting, why food scraps matter, and how local composting supports healthier soil and a healthier community.
- Volunteers may help with sorting organic material, learning composting practices, supporting site activities, and participating in community education around food waste reduction.
- You will be outside for the session, working with food scraps, compost materials, and simple tools or bins.
- Please wear comfortable clothes, closed-toe shoes, and clothing you do not mind getting a little dirty.
- Volunteers should also bring water and be ready to learn, participate, and get involved in a practical solution to food waste.
- Age Requirements:
- Volunteers 14-15 must be accompanied by an adult.
- The minimum age to volunteer solo is 16+.
