Defend a Rare Ecosystem: Habitat Care at Santa Fe Dam
Your help removing invasive plants preserves a biodiverse and rare, alluvial sage scrub habitat, home to the cactus wren among an abundance of other life.
Why: The Santa Fe Dam Natural Area, home to more than 370 plant species, as well as at least 167 bird species, 150 insect species, 11 reptile species, several fungi, and even biological soil crusts, is now a rare ecosystem. This once abundant plant community has been lost to development. Your help prevents degradation of this habitat, defending against biodiversity loss as well as preserving the educational and passive recreational value of this unique, urban-proximal landscape for Angelinos to enjoy.
Who: California Native Plant Society San Gabriel Mountains Chapter protects California’s native plants and their natural habitats through science, education, stewardship, gardening, and advocacy. To increase understanding of California’s native flora and to preserve this rich resource for future generations.
What to Expect:
- You will be using gloved hands and hand tools to remove invasive plants from a designated area so you can expect to be standing, bending, walking, and carrying light bags or tools.
- This is also an educational opportunity. Members of the California Native Plant Society enjoy sharing knowledge of native plants, as well as invasive species and best practices for control. Questions and discussion are welcome, as are taking time to enjoy the flora and fauna and to take photos.
- You will experience the tranquility of this roughly 800 acre natural area, where one encounters beautiful blooms, birds and other intrigues of the landscape; for many, it is a peaceful, restorative contrast to busy, often screen dominated, urban lives.
What's Required:
- Please bring water. We will provide some snacks and water for refills.
- For your safety, please wear sturdy closed-toed shoes, comfortable clothing covering legs and arms, and sun protection (hat and sunscreen).
- All participants must sign both a California Native Plant Society and LA County Parks and Recreation waiver, which will be provided on-site.
