Why: We're healing soil one home at a time. After the Eaton Fire, many Altadena families were left living with contaminated soil in the yards and gardens they call home. This workday brings neighbors, scientists, and volunteers together to treat soil using safe, natural methods — restoring the land beneath our homes so families can garden, play, and gather outside again. It's community care in action.
Who: Community Compound: Dena Soil Project supports organizations and community members in under-resourced areas and those impacted by tragedy to quickly access the support they need, compounding positive impact.
What to Expect:- This workday is open to community members and volunteers who want to support Altadena's recovery through hands-on land healing.
- No experience necessary—just a willingness to work alongside neighbors in collective care and restoration.
- You'll work at your own pace with tools and guidance provided.
- This is physical outdoor work that's also deeply meaningful—each layer we add is part of a longer healing journey for the land and our community.
- We'll be spreading a layer of biochar, protective mulch, and compost. This work supports the soil's natural recovery by:
- Creating habitat for beneficial microorganisms that break down contaminants
- Retaining moisture and regulating soil temperature
- Building the foundation for future regeneration
- Physical Considerations
- Ability to engage in moderate physical activity (bending, lifting, raking, shoveling)
- Comfort working outdoors for extended periods
- Ability to work in variable weather conditions (sun, heat)
- If you have physical limitations, let us know—there are ways to participate at different activity levels
- Safety Requirements
- Closed-toe shoes (required for safety)
- Loose long-sleeve shirt, long pants
- Appropriate clothing that covers skin (long pants recommended)
- Willingness to follow basic safety guidelines around tools and materials
- Masks (N95) *not required but should be considered for sensitive groups
