Wednesday Weekly Community Garden Volunteer – Central (Van Nuys) - DCR
Join us every Wednesday at Central Lutheran in Van Nuys as we work together to care for our community garden and outdoor spaces. Through gardening, beautification, and maintenance projects, volunteers help cultivate a healthier, greener, and more vibrant community.
This is an eligible Daisy Chain Reaction volunteer opportunity. Volunteers who are 18 years of age or older and who opt in during registration for the promotion running between July 22, 2026 at 7:00 AM PST and August 20, 2026 at 7:00 PM PST may participate in a giveaway for a chance to win two (2) GA tickets to Daisy Chain Fields 2026. Participation in the giveaway is completely optional, and you are welcome to volunteer whether or not you choose to enter. See the Official Rules for complete eligibility requirements and terms.
Why: Meaningful change often happens through consistent care. By volunteering in the community garden, you're helping transform hard work into lasting impact through beautification, sustainability, and stewardship of the land. Whether you're maintaining compost, pruning trees, or improving the space, your efforts contribute to something tangible that grows stronger over time.
Who: Central Lutheran strengthens the Van Nuys community through weekly food distributions (600–700 households), English classes, a community garden, vital resources, and our annual Joy Events—volunteer-powered celebrations that uplift and connect our neighbors.
What to Expect: This is a hands-on, team-based role in an active outdoor environment. Volunteers work together on projects that help maintain and improve the garden and surrounding campus.- Clearing weeds from garden and landscape areas
- Turning & maintaining compost area
- Pruning trees and maintaining plant health
- Assisting with cleanup and improvement projects around the site
- Supporting light demolition and repair projects as needed
- General beautification and maintenance of community spaces
- Watering plants and garden areas when necessary
- Must be 18 years or older
- Volunteers should ideally be able to stand for extended periods (breaks are welcome and encouraged)
- This is an active, primarily outdoor role requiring comfortable clothing, long pants, appropriate closed-toe shoes, a hat, and sunscreen
- Volunteers should bring water, sun protection, and gardening gloves
- Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team
- A positive, respectful attitude toward diverse community members is essential
- No gardening experience is required
