Project Leaders: Support the Great LA River CleanUp
Friends of the LA River invites you to join us for our 36th annual Great LA River CleanUp this October, the largest urban River CleanUp in the country. This year, thousands of Angelenos will gather at multiple sites along the 51 miles of the LA River to remove trash, restore habitat, and reconnect with the River. This year’s CleanUp is a chance to roll up your sleeves, meet neighbors, and take direct action for a healthier, more resilient Los Angeles.
Why: We’re looking for project leaders to support everything from setup and check-in to booth support and cleanup. It’s a great way to be part of the action, meet fellow River lovers, and help create a welcoming, joyful event for the whole community. No experience necessary, just bring your energy and we’ll show you the rest.
Who: Friends of the Los Angeles River aims to build capacity for communities, students, and future leaders to advocate for nature, climate and equity on the LA River. We envision a verdant LA River that supports vulnerable communities in climate adaptation. The River will be transformed into a dynamic, functioning ecosystem that reduces flood risk, cleans the air, cools temperatures, and supports the biodiversity essential to our collective well-being.
What to Expect: As a project leader, you will help lead/manage volunteers in doing the following projects during the Great LA River CleanUp at various sites to choose from:- Join other community members to remove litter from the LA River before the winter storms and projected Super El Nino wash all of that litter and debris down the LA River and into the Pacific Ocean.
- Conduct a site visit of the cleanup location that you will lead/support.
- On the day of, PLs will manage the check-in process for roughly 5-20 volunteers to remove litter before it enters storm drains and eventually into the ocean.
- PLs will bring supplies provided by FoLAR, set up, check people in using an event app or sign a paper waiver, give a welcome speech, pass out supplies, answer questions and keep the group together within the cleanup boundaries.
- Collect and record the weights of litter bags and standalone items.
- Take photos of your cleanup site with action shots of people working, smiling, picking up litter, etc.
- Share a brief conclusion detailing the total impacts to FoLAR staff.
- October 3rd:
- Site 1: Willow St. Bridge
