Marine Restoration: Oyster Crafting- DCR

Join Orange County Coastkeeper for a fun and creative volunteer event where we'll transform recycled oyster shells into beautiful handmade crafts!

This is an eligible Daisy Chain Reaction volunteer opportunity. Volunteers who are 18 years of age or older and who opt in during registration for the promotion running between July 22, 2026 at 7:00 AM PST and August 20, 2026 at 7:00 PM PST may participate in a giveaway for a chance to win two (2) GA tickets to Daisy Chain Fields 2026. Participation in the giveaway is completely optional, and you are welcome to volunteer whether or not you choose to enter. See the Official Rules for complete eligibility requirements and terms. 

Why: Every craft you help create contributes to raising awareness and generating donations that make this work possible. Our Marine Restoration Program is dedicated to rebuilding native Olympia oyster populations, which improve water quality, create habitat for marine life, and strengthen coastal resilience. Last year, we recruited more than 1,000 Olympia oysters, which can each filter up to 50 gallons of water a day.

Who: The mission of Orange County Coastkeeper is to protect swimmable, drinkable, fishable water and promote watershed resilience throughout our region.

• Using oyster shells collected from local restaurants and cured for a full year, volunteers will create trinket dishes, ornaments, and other unique items.
• These crafts will be shared with our community at our marine restoration event, where they'll be offered in exchange for donations that help support our oyster restoration and coastal conservation efforts.

• No crafting experience is necessary; all materials and guidance will be provided!
• Create handmade crafts using recycled oyster shells, including trinket dishes, ornaments, and other decorative items.
• Follow provided instructions and safety guidelines while using crafting materials and tools.
• Help organize, sort, and prepare shells and supplies as needed.
• Assist with cleaning up the workspace at the end of the event.
• Work collaboratively with fellow volunteers to create high-quality items that will be shared with the community at our marine restoration event.
• Represent our organization's mission by helping transform recycled materials into meaningful crafts that raise awareness and support for Olympia oyster restoration.

• All volunteers must complete and sign the required liability waiver before attending the event. A link to the waiver is provided here, or you may bring a completed printed copy with you on the day of the event.
• No prior crafting experience is necessary.
• Volunteers should be comfortable participating in light, hands-on crafting activities.

This opportunity is managed by an L.A. Works partner, Orange County Coastkeeper.
