Production Crew member

Join the Catalina Film Festival as a volunteer as a Production Crew Member- handling the physical setup, operation, and tear-down of all venues and events.

Why: Every stage that doesn't wobble, every cable that doesn't trip a guest, and every screen that goes up on time is because of you, your work is the invisible infrastructure that makes it possible for a filmmaker and film enthusiats to walk into a fully-built venue instead of an empty lot, and for CFF to look like the polished, world-class festival it needs to be to keep attracting the films and partners that sustain its mission. Without this crew, there is no premiere, no red carpet, and no festival at all.

Who: The charitable mission of the Catalina Film Institute is to champion IMAGINATION, EDUCATION and DESTINATION with year-round film workshops, industry panels and inspiring events! We are a California Non-Profit Public Benefit Corporation comprised of industry professionals that love film, the creative process, and the story-tellers that create thought-provoking film and new media.

• Assemble stages, screens, signage, tents, barricades, carpets, and step-and-repeats
• Load in and set up gear, furniture, A/V equipment, and lighting
• Strike and load out all materials after the event

• Assist A/V technicians with running cables and setting up projectors, speakers, and monitors
• Perform power distribution and safety checks (under supervision)
• Track equipment, materials, and supplies (cables, radios, signage, etc.)
• Assist with live event changes as needed (mic swaps, stage resets, etc.)
• Lighting basics (optional but beneficial): setup of simple panel lights or DMX-controlled fixtures for intros/Q&As

• Install banners, posters, directional signs, and sponsor visuals
• Ensure signage is aligned with branding guidelines and placed in correct locations

• Move and set up tables, chairs, fencing, and crowd control elements
• Restock supplies and assist with venue cleanliness during events
• Provide backup support for hospitality or box office when needed

• Help load/unload trucks and transport gear or supplies between venues
• May drive rental vans or carts, if licensed and approved

• Respond to last-minute needs from other departments (a blown fuse, a missing radio, an unlevel stage riser)
• Act quickly and flexibly, often under pressure

• Must be 18 years or older, with the physical ability to lift, carry, and move equipment weighing up to [40–50 lbs] repeatedly throughout a shift.
• Availability for both setup and strike shifts where assigned (pre-event build days and/or post-event teardown), including early mornings, late nights, or extended hours as the festival schedule requires.
• Reliable transportation to Catalina Island and to the venue site, with ability to arrive on time for scheduled crew call.
• Ability to follow safety instructions and work under direct supervision, particularly around power distribution, rigging, and equipment handling—no prior certification required, but must take direction seriously in a live construction/teardown environment.
• Comfort working in a physically demanding, fast-paced environment, including standing, bending, and working at height or with tools, and staying flexible when priorities shift last-minute (a common feature of load-in/load-out days).

• Physically fit, detail-oriented, and able to follow directions
• Comfortable working long hours, including late nights or early mornings
• Familiarity with basic tools, rigging, and safety practices is a plus
